 Sorry, after some experimenting, I discovered that I made a mistake.
 Moving ~/.purple away did help (I had forgotten that the buddy list
 doesn't show up until you have at least one account configured).  In fact,
 I narrowed it down to the accounts.xml file.  I'm going to attach the bad
 accounts.xml, with my usernames and passwords replaced.
