Ok, jumping back in here a bit...

A couple of things... partly related, partly not.

 Pidgin 2.5.5 Source released:
 http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pidgin/pidgin-2.5.5.tar.bz2

Pidgin 2.5.5 RPM's NOT released (latest version is 2.5.4).
 http://rpm.pidgin.im/fedora/7/i386/
 http://rpm.pidgin.im/fedora/7/x86_64/

So, I decided to download the source, and compile it.
After several crashes with requests to download additional modules &
 libraries, it finally compiled.

And, I think I got 2.5.5 installed on my machine (Fedora 7).

The Buddy List Synchronization Error went away with the update from 2.5.4
 to 2.5.5.
So, the Windows Communicator accounts appear to show up fine, and have
attempted to send messages, haven't verified receipt or 2-way
 conversations yet.

 However,
In the process Pidgin became quite unstable just vanishing from the task
list, or opening windows in which I could type text, but not see any
 responses.

I think I was also having troubles with YouTube not opening properly at
 about the same time.

I've updated Adobe FLASH (flash-plugin-10.0.22.87-release.i386)(not sure
if it was related to Pidgin errors), but after a reboot, YouTube was back.

Anyway, I'm back to testing the new release (2.5.5 under Fedora Core 7),
 and so far, so good.

Buddy List Synchronization Error appears to be gone, and it hasn't crashed
in the last 10 minutes, and I can even see the text in a (Yahoo)
 conversation.

As noted above, the workaround: "Use Address with Windows Live Messenger"
had never worked for me so I gave up on it... so the Buddy List error
apparently was fixed with the update to 2.5.5.
