#9000: Getting Ubuntu started from CD

I downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and created a CD. My hardware environment is an
Acer Aspire 5100, BIOS V3.05B, System memory 633KB, extended memory
 1279KB, video memory 256KB.
The CD/DVD drive is defined as the starting device. The introductory
ubuntu screen with the options is showing up. And that's where all the
journeys ended. I couldn't start anything from there, especially not the
use of Ubuntu from the CD without installation.
Background: I lost all my USB interfaces due to driver problems in Windows
Vista and Microsoft support proofed to be unable to listen to my
observations and couldn't fix the problem. They only have stolen a day
from me. So I decided to switch, but can't use any external device to back
up my files before doing so!
Thanks for advice of whatever kind
