 I have the same problem with 2.5.5/xp,sp3

 Debug window reported:

 (11:57:57) dnsquery: Performing DNS lookup for scs.msg.yahoo.com

 (11:57:57) proxy: Connecting to scs.msg.yahoo.com:5050 with no proxy
 (11:57:57) proxy: Connection in progress
 (11:57:58) proxy: Connecting to scs.msg.yahoo.com:5050.
 (11:57:58) proxy: Error connecting to scs.msg.yahoo.com:5050 (Connection
 refused.).

 "ipconfig /flushdns" worked for me after two tries.  After the first try,
 the IP address for scs.msg.yahoo.com had not changed, but after the second
 try, the IP address was different, and the connection succeeded.

 Pidgin rocks^H^H^H^H flies!!! (Well, at least 73.1% of the time,
 anyway...)
