 Correct, the pidgin bug is that we allow ourselves to send illegal
 characters. But on a more strictly conforming server you would only ever
 be able to kick yourself as the server would notice the bogus XML and kick
 you off for sending it. (Not that I think servers are required to do this
 as it intensifies their processing requirements *immensely*, but some do
 and it moves the breakage to a better place.)
