 Not sure if this will help or not, but it might give some insight.
 I used telnet scs.msg.yahoo.com 5050
 Trying 66.163.181.181...
 telnet: connect to address 66.163.181.181: Connection refused

 As you can see, eventually it connects (and so does Pidgin).  Perhaps an
 extended timeout or faster retry?
