Comment:

 The only account which seems to not suffer of this type of problem seems
 to be the xmpp one: being a sane protocol, its implementation sanely ping
 every x minutes its server to check what to do/show locally.If ping
 fails,it just go offline,notice the user and keep pinging at regular
 intervals.
 Now I could be wrong here, but an approach like this could solves all the
 problem of interface with specific implementation: I mean what if I am not
 using a network manager at all?
 A *ping* some custom server option in every account could manage 99% of
 cases like that, and implementing something like that should be easy.

 It should be like a pidgin overall extension to all non-sane protocols
 (that is all but xmpp).
 Could be ok ?
