Hi, I'm noticing from a great span of time (maybe 6-7 months and more) a
pesky bug in Pidgin. I start with saying that I use Pidgin only for MSN,
and that some images on systems with CPUs slow by some people 's standard
(but that for me are fast):
- Pentium II 350
- Celeron 400 Mhz (Mendocino)
- Celeron 433 Mhz (Mendocino)
- Pentium MMX 200
Pidgin when displaying some animated images REALLY bogs down: it cannot
succeed to draw the entire window, for example he draws only some parts of
the window and the images in a skippy manner etc. A workaround is to
select some text and then scrolling the messages with this selection, it
sometimes unblocks a bit it... but once in 3-4 hours I have a total bog
down where Pidgin simply can't be made to respond anymore and I must kill
and restart it...
The fact is that sometimes when I and a fellow talk and the image(s) that
cause the bogging down came away because they go up, it returns 100%
responsive!
I have noticed this from maybe the start of the 2.5.x series... I don't
remember if it did happen with the 2.4.x series... It happens on all of
the Windows NT 5.x series (2000, XP, 2003) but I sometime used Pidgin
2.5.something on NetBSD 4.99.something (I remember it to be over .50)
last year on the Pentium II 350 and I don't remember if I experienced even
on NetBSD the problem or not...
My suspect is that some shit code is floating around the animation code
(I'm not sure if you use libungif etc.) (I'm not sure if there are
animated PNGs but I heard of them and maybe I even encountered them)...
I will test the latest release of the Pidgin 2.4.x series on my Pentium
MMX 200 with 80 MB RAM (IBM PC 330 6577-KGU) and see what happens...
