 The problem was that there was an OS level corruption on the
 /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin directory.

 When doing an 'ls' on that directory all that was returned was a bunch of
 garbage.  Deleting that directory, uninstalling, and reinstalling pidgin
 (with aptitude) corrected the problem.
