 Tried to upgrade to 2.5.8 on a Tosh NB100 Ubuntu Netbook

 Keys and PPA installed OK, and shows 2.5.8 as update in Synaptic, but it
 is impossible to install due to dependency issues:

 The PPA wants to de-install the old libpurple0 (fair enough)

 The dependencies for the new libpurple0 will not install it on this fully
 patched 8.04 netbook edition.

 Problem appears to be perl, it wants 5.8.8-12ubuntu0.4, whereas the
 installed (and latest) package is 5.8.8-12.

 Appears to be an overly aggressive dependency spec. , but haven't been
 able to override, so cannot install working pidgin (yahoo-im user)
