Comment:

 We reproduced this with me using 2.6.0devel and sending formatted text
 before/after the smiley face and the reporter using the most recent
 version of AIM in a VM.

 The reporter is going to get a packet capture (or I am, if I remember) so
 we can see what the formatting looks like on Pidgin's outgoing messages.
