Comment:

Sorry for being unclear, the version of libpurple0 that the update is
trying to install is whatever the 2.5.8 pidgin package wants.

 The sequence of events is:

 Accept the update for pidgin
 Dependencies remove the old libpurple0
Dependencies then warn new libpurple0 cannot be installed due to
 unresolved deps

The exact message from synaptic is:
 ------
 pidgin:
Depends: libpurple0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: perl (>=5.8.8-12ubuntu0.4) but 5.8.8-12 is to be installed
   Depends: pidgin-data (>=1:2.5.8) but 1:2.4.3-0ubuntu1~hardy1netbook3 is
 to be installed
 ------
only additional repository is the pidgin-ppa, all others are as pre-
 installed, contents of sources.list is:
 -------

 ----

As I say, it appears to be the very specific version of perl that is
causing the problem, as nothing matching this appears in the
 hardy(netbook) repositories.

 Thanks for the quick reply.

 Ken.
