 Adium handles this with an (undocumented, as far as I can tell) keyboard
 shortcut. When you're typing your long response, Ctrl-s hides what you're
 currently writing and puts an icon in the corner of the field to show that
 there's a hidden response. Pressing Ctrl-s again toggles back, and keeps
 the icon there if you've typed something in the second field.

 I'd imagine that implementing this would be a matter of binding a key to
 swap the current contents of the text field with a buffer and display/hide
 the icon, though I don't know where this would have to be done.
