Comment:

 If you've set an alias for the buddy locally, that will not be overridden
 by the buddy setting his/her alias.

 Try right-clicking on the contact and selecting "Expand". Then, right-
 click on the little person icon that is selected, choose Alias, and delete
 the contents of that field and right-click on the buddy, choose Alias, and
 delete the contents of that field.

 If you do that, do you now see the alias your buddy has set?
