 If by "last entered text" you mean the last character of the message, then
 I agree, and this is IMHO the expected behaviour and also the existing
 behaviour of all rich text editors.

 Currently, as far as I can determine, pidgin uses the format of the
 character where the cursor is as reference for formatting text on the next
 message, which many times is confusing and many times I had to use the
 "reset formatting" button because of this.
