Comment:

 all ways should be changed.

 just show to user its is no good to close underad messages.

 i suggest to show grayed close button for 1 second after you receive
 message. if user close message, it should be still market as unreaded.

 application recation to close can be different. it can prevent to close
 window. or it can show it unreaded (blinking icon)
