 I've not used this plugin for well over a year (since I moved from Windows
 to Linux).  As I recall, the plugin would popup a message IF there was a
 new version.  So I would "argue" that if you're not using the latest
 version of Pidgin, you should be...and if you don't want to use the latest
 version for some reason, then disable that plugin!
