Comment:

 I resolved the issue.  Windows Update served up a device driver that
 stopped my network card from being able to sleep.  I turned on startup
 applications one by one to try & find the reason, and for some reason
 Pidgin was the one that triggered the issue, so I thought it was Pidgin-
 specific.  Thanks for the quick response, and sorry for the trouble!
