 Ok, I think I found a lead. This happens only on my user account. If I
 create a blank system user account and login with pidgin there (same
 software versions of course), it logins instantly.

 So something is probably wrong in ~/.purple. How can I pinpoint it? In
 both cases, there is no particular CPU usage pattern, but I wonder what's
 this cap.db and why it's so big:

 ~$ du -hs .purple/*|grep M
 1,2M    .purple/cap.db
 5,3M    .purple/icons
 33M     .purple/logs
