 After upgrading to Pidgin 2.6.1 from PPA (Ubuntu), I found that if I
 launch pidgin from the gnome launch panel or GNOME Do, it no longer reads
 the GNOME proxy settings as previous versions. But it did work well in
 2.5.8.

 And something different I noticed in preferences-network.

 Please check the screenshot:
 my user
 root

 Work around 1: if I launch pidgin from a CLI, and set the specific
 account's proxy settings to "use environmental settings", it does work.
 (I have the right environmental settings as I apply the proxy settings via
 gnome).

 Work around 2: launch pidgin using root and it has a different appearance
 in preferences - network. Set it and it just works.
