Comment:

 If you have an alias set for a particular user, or yourself, Pidgin will
 show that alias in preference to the current nick.  You can check this in
 the buddy list for other users (right-click buddy, Alias... (or something
 similar)) and in the Account dialog for yourself (click Modify Account for
 your IRC account, check the Local alias field).

 If this isn't the case, then you're seeing a bug that I have not seen.
 What server are you using, and can you get me a network trace of someone
 changing their nick (say, using wireshark)?
