 but then how do you explain the AIM symbol beside the ICQ account?
 when that changed, it all worked, with the same account.

 Here's the timeline (format: icon accountNameOrNumber (protocol))
 1 - created account and tried different usernames without success: aim
 12345678 (ICQ)
 2 - changed to an aim account without success of course: aim 12345678
 (AIM)
 3 - changed again to icq and now it worked, with the correct account
 icon/name/protocol: icq 12345678 (ICQ)
