 Regarding:

 "Can you connect with any other clients?" - Can you connect successfully
 with several accounts with something like Psi? My guess is that you'll run
 into the same issue.

 I managed to configure two accounts using Miranda IM and I didn't run into
 the same issue. I got the two accounts up and running simultaneously. So,
 I believe the problem is in Pidgin. Is it not?
