 The only thing I could do back then was manually adding buddys back by
 reading the locally stored xml buddylist.

 It seems to me that the current release of Pidgin (2.6.3) has gotten rid
 of a lot of buddy list issues. However, I dont't know about this specific
 issue.

 Are you using an older version?
