 Is it possible that you had several instances running at the time you had
 the issue?

 The reason that you'd see "an instance of pidgin is already running" is if
 it can't find the existing instance's "message window" or can't
 successfully send a message to it.

 At any rate, if it is working now, I'm not going to worry about it too
 much if it doesn't reoccur.
