 A friend IM'd me over AIM from his Blackberry (Pearl 8130) using their AIM
 client and every message he wrote that didn't start with the letter "I"
 came in garbled as UTF8 characters. He tested it with other people and
 they could all see his messages, and I could receive messages from other
 people as well without a problem.

 We tested it on both of my computers (both Windows Vista, 2.6.4) and both
 times I saw garbled text.

 The text I received was almost entirely in the Han unification range, if
 that helps.
