Comment(by mechgt):

 I'm running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 with Pidgen 2.6.2 and am having the same
 issues described in the original post, plus I cannot view incoming video
 from GMail. Incoming video will crash the conversation window. Below,
 Pidgen refers to Ubuntu Karmic client, and GMail refers to another user's
 GMail chat window.

 Lets assume only Pidgin has a webcam attached: Incoming calls from GMail
 will crash Pidgin (entire application needs to be restarted). If the same
 IM is initiated from Pidgin, it will not crash Pidgin, and GMail user can
 see video from Pidgin.

 If GMail user has webcam (regardless of whether Pidgin has webcam or not)
 and Pidgin initiates video chat, the Pidgin chat window will be terminated
 as soon as the 'call' is accepted. A single video frame is sent to GMail
 user, but that's it, and the conversation needs to be restarted. I cannot
 get two webcams talking between GMail and Pidgin. (If the same is
 initiated from GMail, Pidgen crashes as described in first scenario.)
