 I have also taken it a step further and restored the account.xml file to
 its previous state in every respect except for the password for the
 account in question. Pidgin fires up just fine, but the minute I attempt
 to enter the password it crashes. Even if I allow it to launch with that
 account "disabled" and then try to connect by entering the password.

 Clearly, Pidgin no longer plays nice with UTF-8 passwords. Why? ICQ itself
 works just fine with those kinds of passwords…
