 I am having the exact same issue.

 Pidgin 2.6.4

 Running an internal '''Openfire 3.6.4''' server.
 I was able to launch an alternate client (Exodus) and did not see this
 behavior.

 It only appears to be people in which I have communicated to in the past.
 I am not getting this for everyone.

 It does not matter if they are currently logged in or not.

 Happens when I disable/enable the account as well as closing/relaunching
 application.

 The duplication of contacts is not a constant number. Some contacts have a
 handful of duplication and others will have 50+ duplicates and its not
 related to how much I communicate with them. One of my least contacted
 buddies has the most duplicated names.

 I only have one working contact when they are online and all other
 duplications show offline.
