Comment:

 What version of Ubuntu are you using?  At the bottom of the Help->About
 dialog, what does it list as the arguments passed to ./configure?

 Do you have the ca-certificates package installed?  Do you see
 /etc/ssl/certs/GTE_CyberTrust_Global_Root.pem (it's probably a symlink to
 /usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla/GTE_CyberTrust_Global_Root.crt)?
