 I don't really think xmlnode_copy is the problem. I can print out the
 iq->node before the copy and it's incorrect there as well. As you said,
 using xmlnode_from_str works fine, so perhaps the parser that XMPP is
 using is broken (it doesn't use xmlnode_from_str, I believe).
