 You can find this in the theme file of the default small theme:

 # XMPP emoticons
 [...]
 glasses-cool.png          B-)
 [...]
 monkey.png                :(|)
 victory.png               \\m/
 }}}
 These three image files are missing. Because of that you only see an icon
 with a red cross.
