Comment:

 The output that displayed correctly was wrapped in `<span style="font-
 family: Arial Unicode MS;">...</span>` (so in that case "Arial Unicode MS"
 was used).  In the cases that didn't display correctly there was no font
 specified by the sender, so it is using your default GTK+ font.

 The problem is that your default GTK+ font doesn't include those glyphs.

 In Tools->Preferences->Conversations do you have "Use font from theme" set
 or do you have a font explicitly selected there?
