Comment:

 Yes I had that field filled in.

 Although it was in the advanced tab it somehow seemed good to specify,
 apparently not. Perhaps some kind of warning that it is an override or
 optional setting.

 I emptied those fields and now pidgin behave as expected.

 Not sure if my suggestion above qualifies as as enhancement request, if
 not, just close this ticket as the issue has been resolved for me.
