Comment:

 You need to get the output of the Help->Debug Window when you are trying
 to cnnect but this sounds like you have network problems. You also don't
 need to manually specify the connect server unless you know your network
 has problems with DNS SRV records.

 You should also upgrade from pidgin 2.4.1 to pidgin 2.5.4.
