 I came here with a similar complaint except I'm behind in version 2.5.2
 for CentOS.  I know that's not the newest, but I can't find any indication
 of a fixed bug like that, and found a couple open ones.

 Basically - the HTML-clipboard-copy seems to be wrong.

 In my case, I think it's really related to bug 4591, too (which seems to
 be ignored...)

 Specifically, if I copy from the Conversation window and paste that into
 the same (or another) Pidgin conversation window, it doesn't work.
 Typically, I get the first character, or a <.  Pasting into OTHER apps
 doesn't work... UNLESS that app only accepts text.

 Plain Text paste DOES work.  But just paste never does.  (And therefore
 CTRL-V doesn't, which is what makes this EXTREMELY annoying to me - If you
 can't fix this bug, I'd settle for being able to bind CTRL-V in Pidgin to
 always paste PlainText.)

 To make that point extra clear:  If I copy, I can paste into any other app
 with the same effect.  If I paste as plain text, it works.  If I copy from
 Pidgin and paste into a plaintext editor, I can then copy that same text
 and paste it back into Pidgin.
