New description:
If a definition of custom smiley in the "theme" file contains a backlash,
the smiley is misinterpreted or not interpreted at all (the assigned
graphics does not show, just text). Try to assign these smileys to some
PNGs and test them in a conversation window:

Interestingly, when you type <3, you'll get the graphics for <\3.
