 From Debian bug report http://bugs.debian.org/504314:

 purple-send and purple-send-async mask the return value of dbus-send.
 Even if dbus-send returns an error, the purple wrappers will not.
 This makes it difficult to write logic like "try to send a message,
 and if that fails launch pidgin".
