 I have gathered some more information:[[BR]]

 1) The issue is still present in 2.5.4 though the assertions which had
 been printed to the debug window are no longer present.[[BR]]

 2) Selecting the buddy entry from an expanded contact does not make the
 contact disappear, but selecting the contact entry does. When the entry
 disappears in the expanded state it returns collapsed.[[BR]]

 3) Selecting show when offline causes the contact to stay when
 clicked.[[BR]]

 4) When show when offline is enabled and the contact is expanded, the
 buddy entry disappears leaving only the contact entry.[[BR]]
