 Issues taken in order of simplicity, split up into multiple responses for
 ease.

 Issue 3: The pidgin config files are not in an unusual location, and their
 location is not at all related to the problem you had. The problem you had
 is that contact aliases are only stored locally, and that buddy aliases
 are only stored locally on virtually all protocols. Thus, if you delete or
 lose your local configuration pidgin can only restore (from the server)
 the data that was stored on the server which is not going to include the
 aliases.

 If you wanted to keep your data when you set PURPLEHOME you could have by
 moving the configuration data to the new location.
