gaim/pidgin packages for my OS for the last 6 years it has been very far
from that goal, especially depending on the release and the protocols
 being used.

This is almost certainly an indication of a larger, quite possibly Pidgin-
external, problem. While certain Pidgin releases have been unfortunately
unstable, for the most part Pidgin is very stable. The MySpace protocol
plugin is known to be unstable, as are several third-party protocol
plugins. If you are not using third-party protocol plugins, and you are
not loading third-party functionality plugins (which it sounds like you
are not), Pidgin should be stable. Please collect backtraces for us so we
can try to track down the issue or identify the external source of
 problems.

You don't name your platform; Windows Pidgin has more instability than
Unix Pidgin due to various factors, many of which are beyond our control
(e.g., bugs in the Gtk+ versions available to us). SkyOS is known to be
buggy and have various Pidgin problems, although none of the Pidgin
developers participate in its for-pay beta program, so we don't know if
the problems are with services Pidgin itself uses, or Gtk+, or what.
Certain Linux distributions patch Pidgin or its dependencies (gtkspell
 being a favorite -- Pidgin + gtkspell patches + certain Gtk+ themes is a
known crasher) to add functionality which is known to cause problems. If
you are in one of these situations, we might be able to steer you toward
the culprit with some more information. Sometimes making compilation
(e.g., compiling without gtkspell support) or environment (e.g., setting
the Gtk+ theme to "default") can help identify the source.

Of course, any given crash is also quite possibly a Pidgin bug, so please
 keep the backtraces coming. :-)

Your comment changed this bug from pending to new because I had set it
pending. Pending is a status which closes a bug in two weeks if the
 original poster does not comment.
