 I had a previous ticket #8079 in about 2 months ago regarding this "adding
 buddies to AIM" issue.  Though this was happening in 2.5.3,the issue still
 resides in 2.5.4.

 When adding a new buddy to AIM, pidgin automatically BLOCKS that new added
 user.  You must manually unblock them

 - buddies/show/offline buddies
 - right click on the new buddy
 - select "unblock"

 I don't have to follow the above steps when adding users in

 - Yahoo
 - Sametime
 - MSN
 - googletalk
