Comment:

 Can you telnet to login.messaging.aol.com on port 5190? Do you have
 firewall or anti-virus software running? Are you on a network that has a
 firewall? If you can't connect to the server on the specified port via
 telnet or some other similar tool then this isn't a pidgin issue.
