 I haven't tried the patches yet, but "repair"ing my (wireless) network
 connection gets Pidgin to finish closing (disabling the connection also
 works, but since I want it re-enabled anyway...) - it's not a proper fix,
 but it's a reasonable workaround (no idea whether it offers any further
 insight into the problem).

 I'm running XP SP3 (with auto-updating, so should be up to date) and, for
 me, the problem started with 2.5.3
