Comment:

 I'm going to guess here that you set the status to "Extended Away" when
 you created your saved status.  This is the problem--there's no clean
 extended away mapping for yahoo that allows us to set a status message.
 "On Vacation" is a distinct yahoo status whose status message can't be
 overridden and is what the extended away status is mapped to.

 If you edit that status and click the expander beside "Use a different
 status for some accounts", you can then put a checkmark beside your Yahoo
 account, change the status to Away in the box that appears, and type a
 message.  You can then save the status again and the status text you typed
 will show to your yahoo buddies.
