 I got the same error message. Though I am using a different rpm:
 [http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Community/openSUSE_11.0/i586/pidgin-2.5.4-3.1.i586.rpm]

 I guess it was caused by an older version of libpurple which was left from
 a former install. I solved it by deleting anything looking like
 pidgin/libpurple I found. After that I could install the rpms without any
 problems.

 For me this seems even more likely since I found
 purple_account_clear_current_error() was added in version 2.3.0
 (11/24/2007).
