 It hangs when I try to open a conversation window, not when I try to send
 a message.
 Turning the sound off helped a little but there is still a small hang.
  The wiki article "Getting A Backtrace" is about getting a backtrace of a
 crash, but my problem is a small hang, few seconds of  not responding
 windows before I can see the conversation window. Is this article relevant
 for my problem?

 Getting a backtrace with gdb requires a lot of free space for all the
 "debuginfo" packages (GDB asks for more than ten debuginfo packages, not
 just the pidgin-debuginfo) so i cannot give any backtrace (using) right
 now.

 I'm attaching the purple-debug.log file from pidgin's debug information
 window, I hope that this will be helpful until i'll get GDB's backtrace.
