 I'm not a Miranda developer, but I got into the problem :)

 It looks like AOL is rejecting connections from Russia and other ex-USSR
 countries
 based not on client name/versions but on packet sequence numbers. Miranda
 developers
 have figured that the first packet sequence number now must be not random
 (as it
 was to be previously). They have sniffed several good sequence numbers
 from the
 official (and working correctly) ICQ client and posted the solution as a
 patch
 to Miranda. The patch (several posts before) looks okay for pidgin. At
 least it works
 for both i386 and amd64 ubuntu builds.
