Comment:

 The status changes to new because it had been previously set to 'pending'.
 The pending status means that we have requested information from the user
 who submitted the ticket and if we have not received an answer in two
 weeks time the system will automatically close the ticket for us. As such,
 it needs to unset the pending status when the author responds. So don't
 worry about it, things are working as intended.

 As to your hang, try disabling spell checking in pidgin and seeing if that
 helps. That backtrace ends in functions from enchant and hunspell.
