Comment:

 He has selected a font for his outgoing messages that either does not have
 the required characters or which you do not have and whatever substitue
 font GTK+ is selecting does not have the characters. If you disable the
 showing of incoming formatting in the preferences you should see the
 characters correctly in the same font you see yourself using (unless you
 are setting outgoing font formatting as well). Confirm the font your
 friend is using and see if you have it and whether it has the appropriate
 characters.
